On Friday April 4th, 2008, your Silver Star Dental office proudly hosted the national launch of the Store-A-Tooth™ dental stem cell banking service. As a biology major in college and self-professed life-long student, I remain fascinated by biotechnology, especially when it involves the profession and patients I love. Feel confident knowing I am dedicated to being on the forefront of dental advancements in order to provide your child superior dentistry.
Stem cells have unique regenerative properties and have great potential to produce groundbreaking treatments for a myriad of conditions and diseases in the future. Researchers have discovered that baby teeth and wisdom teeth are a rich source of "adult" stem cells. Unlike embryonic stem cells that have questionable ethical and moral implications, adult stem cells like those found in teeth are not controversial and are easy to obtain.
Jeff Gruneich, Ph.D. realized this when he started his company with 3 other visionary entrepreneurs to create Store-A-Tooth™ in Boston, MA. Unlike umbilical cord blood derived stem cells that can lead to blood cells and treatments of blood-related diseases; dental derived stem cells give rise to bone and neural cells and their related diseases and conditions. Something To Celebrate
Enjoy knowing your child's dental office is unique - your child's dental team cares deeply about the health and well-being of all children. That's why part of Dr. Hsu's mission is to help children in our community (and beyond) that do not have the means or access to the dental care they need. You'll be happy to know that this past year your Silver Star Dental team exceeded our goals.
A recent survey sent by the local dental organization requested a dollar value of the pro bono dental work performed at our office in 2007. So our team's office manager, Nancy, calculated the dollar amount of the free services our office provided that entire year. The number we came up with was astonishing. In 2007, based on our fee schedule, The Silver Star Dental team provided $32,122 in dental services at no charge to patients with no dental insurance and no financial means to pay for dental care.
Each year since Silver Star Dental opened, our team is actively involved in the local Smiles For Kids program. Underprivileged children enjoy a "free" dental day at our office and receive desperately needed dental services. This past year, our team also participated in the California Dental Association's Pediatric Oral Health Access Program (POHAP). Through this program, 23 children were seen and treated over the course of the year at no charge.
The greatest amount of dental disease exists among those in the underprivileged population and the lack of access to dental care for those patients can lead to heart-wrenching results. In 2007, a 12 year old boy with no dental insurance died because he had a severe dental infection and no dental care provider was willing to see him. Dental caries, the infectious disease that leads to cavities, is near epidemic levels in young school-age children, especially in California. Programs such as the ones mentioned above, and dentists willing to pitch in are sorely needed to put a dent in this growing problem.
